K-beauty has evolved immensely since it arrived stateside, but one phenomenon still holds true: Snail mucin reigns supreme. This unique ingredient has yet to lose traction among skin-care enthusiasts, and for good reason. “It reflects the core strengths of Korean skin care: a focus on gentle, hydrating formulations, skin barrier repair, and thoughtful innovation,” says Y. Claire Chang, M.D., a board-certified dermatologist in New York City. “While it first drew attention due to its novelty, what has sustained its popularity were the real, observable benefits.”
To that end, snail mucin is fairly unique in its makeup. It’s brimming with humectants, glycoproteins, and peptides, which work together to “support skin hydration, soothe irritation, and promote a healthier skin barrier, which aligns well with the broader K-beauty philosophy of nurturing the skin rather than aggressively treating it,” Dr. Chang continues.

Another contributing factor may be the fact that there’s no comparable ingredient in the US when it comes to the novelty—in other words, there was a shock factor to give it a boost, per Michelle Park, M.D., a board-certified dermatologist in New York City. “Korean beauty had always utilized ingredients very foreign to Western cultures like ginseng and other unfamiliar plants, but the idea of using snail mucin was in a league of its own,” she says. If you have yet to add it to your skin-care routine—or are looking for a fresh formula to try—here’s where to start.
